SSS Litter Bin: Redefining Outdoor Trash Classification

The inspiration behind the SSS Litter Bin stems from the desire to transform ordinary sanitation facilities into quality designs that command respect from users and sanitation workers alike. Xu's goal was to purify the information and reduce unnecessary details, ultimately changing the perception of these essential but often overlooked elements of urban infrastructure.

What sets the SSS Litter Bin apart is its unification of bold contrast and maximized functionality. The bin features the largest opening for dropping trash from two sides, making it user-friendly for pedestrians and cyclists. The interior is painted with two vivid colors, effectively indicating recyclable and non-recyclable waste. Additionally, the upward design of the ashtray collector offers better social smoking stations, aligning with Shanghai's restricted indoor smoking policy.

The SSS Litter Bin is not only visually appealing but also optimized for maintenance. The design incorporates simplified conductors, reducing the effort required for upkeep. This innovation has garnered positive feedback from sanitation workers, who now find it easier to maintain cleanliness in all corners of the bins.

Constructed using 304 stainless steel with fine brush finishes, the SSS Litter Bin is a testament to the designer's attention to detail. The metallic baking paint and silk printed signs add a touch of sophistication to the overall aesthetic.

Measuring 900mm x 400mm x 1000mm, the SSS Litter Bin can accommodate two 40L can liners and features a removable 5L ashtray. Its compact size and versatile design make it suitable for various outdoor environments.

The SSS Litter Bin, also known as the SSS Municipal Litter Bin, Outdoor Rubbish Can, or Smoking Station, was part of the Urban Design Festival 2017 in Shanghai. It replaced 20 existing bins on Yuyuan Road, between Dingxi Road and Jiangsu Road. The positive response from both sanitation workers and the public has solidified its position as a successful design intervention.

Recognized for its ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements, the SSS Litter Bin was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology.
